a Castle in the town of Middleham, in the county of North Yorkshire

About Middleham Castle

Picturesque, ruinous castle, which was said to be the favourite home of Richard III. It was built in 1170 by Richard Neville, Earl of Warwick. Later in the 13th and 14th-centuries curtain walls and lodgings were added.

The castle has a varied history, it became the home of Richard III when he was made Lord of the North. It was here that he brought his wife Anne Neville after their marriage in 1472 and it was whilst at the castle that their son Edward was born in 1473. Richard spent twelve years at Middleham during which time he restored peace and harmony to what had previously been one of England's most troublesome regions. He worked assiduously for peace, earned the respect of all and was extremely well liked. Richard's word was his bond, a fact much appreciated by the earthy, straight talking northern folk. He developed a healthy respect for the people of York and in return was held in the highest esteem.

Richard III's history is well documented, what is not generally known was his deep affection for Middleham Castle and life in the north of England. He was crowned King in 1483.

By the standards of the day the accommodation at Middleham Castle was luxurious, here the great and the good of the times were lavishly entertained. But the castle had a darker side, many prisoners where held within its walls, never to see the light of day again, especially during the time of the Wars of the Roses when it was a powerhouse of politics.

After the 16th-century, the castle began to decline in importance. It was later left uninhabited and fell into the romantic ruin we see today.
